Be Here, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible are banners that greet Green Wave freshmen as they fill the halls of Gallatin High School’s Academy every day. This year, the Freshman Academy is launching a reward system, appropriately called ANCHOR, to encourage freshmen to make the best choices everyday. Students caught doing something good in or out of class will be given an anchor card that they can turn in for frequent prize drawings and for privileges at the end of the year celebration – Academy Awards Day. Teachers, principals, front office staff, and cafeteria staff will all award ANCHOR cards to students.
Achieving Notoriety through Citizenship, Honor, Organization, and Reliability is the acronym for the new program. Students who exhibit these qualities through their actions have no alternative but to be successful in school and life. Freshmen students may earn cards for perfect attendance, good grades, earning student of the week, or for any behavior deemed positive or beneficial to Gallatin High School by staff.
Community members may question the notion of rewarding students for behaviors that should simply be expected, but human beings of all ages respond to rewards: a pat on the back, employee of the month, a monetary raise, a job promotion, or simply an honorary title are all ways adults get rewarded in the working world. Why not students?
“The new ANCHOR program takes the emphasis off of negative behavior and puts it on positive behavior,” said Jennifer Moore, a faculy team leader in the Academy. Although negative behavior will still be dealt with appropriately, this system aims to put the spotlight on students who are living above the line.
“This new reward system is also a great way for the community to get involved,” offers Scott Hunt, a Freshman Focus teacher at GHS. Gallatin business owners who want to participate by donating prizes for the ANCHOR drawings should contact jennifer.moore@sumnerschools.org.
