Parent-Teacher Conferences Coming SOON!!!

by

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held at GHS on Thursday, September 30th from 1 PM to 7 PM.

On Tuesday, September 21st, all Freshmen should bring home a conference scheduling letter to their parents that they will receive in 1st block.  All scheduling letters should be returned to school with the student AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Conference times will disappear quickly as each conference is only allowed 15 minutes.  The last conference is scheduled to BEGIN at 6:45 PM.  Once all teachers have confirmed a conference time, students will return the conference scheduling letter to their parents.  If parents feel they will need a longer conference time, please schedule an alternate date and time to meet with those teachers.  Any parents who do not receive a form, please send your student to Mrs. Moore (Room 315) or Mr. Hoover (Room 314) to pick up a form.

We look forward to seeing you!

On Friday, we will have our first Pep Rally of the year.  It will be an all out blow out!!!!  Freshmen need a WHITE OUT!!  Wear all white and dress it up with some Green and Gold.  Don’t forget to bring a white sock or shirt to wave during the Pep Rally.  If you don’t know the cheers, be sure to ask your teachers throughout the week.  Also, practice the Alma Mater and the Fight Song!!!!

Friday is also special because school will be dismissed at 1:45 PM.  This is just for GHS.  Therefore, busses will not run until their normal time.  Please have someone at school PROMPTLY at 1:45 PM to pick you up if you DO NOT plan to ride the bus home.  We must clear out the front parking lot ASAP in order to begin lining up for the parade.

It’s MAGAZINE time in G-town!!!!

by

The annual GHS Magazine Drive kicked off last Wednesday. The first turn-in day is Thursday, September 2nd!!!

The magazine drive has a rich tradition of success at GHS who has been #1 in the NATION 20 times in the 37 year history of the drive.  All proceeds from the magazine drive help to provide technology and supplies for GHS students.  GHS boasts in the amount of technology available to students.  But, it is all courtesy of the students, parents, and community who so faithfully support the magazine drive.

The goal for Monday is that every class turn in a magazine sale, at least 4 classes have 100% of their students turn in a magazine sale, & an overall turn-in of at least $25,000.  The reward…Class Olympics!!!  The class olympics from last year were one of the FAVORITE highlights for the 2009 – 2010 school year.

In addition, all students who turn in at least $100 in sales on this first turn-in will be allowed to participate in a Movie Day Pay Off where they will watch a full length feature film in the theater on the newly installed Big Screen and Projector.

Don’t miss out on these awesome incentives!  We’re looking forward to a GREAT turn in on Thursday!!!

Be Here Be Respectful Be Responsible

by

Be Here, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible are banners that greet Green Wave freshmen as they fill the halls of Gallatin High School’s Academy every day.  This year, the Freshman Academy is launching a reward system, appropriately called ANCHOR, to encourage freshmen to make the best choices everyday.  Students caught doing something good in or out of class will be given an anchor card that they can turn in for frequent prize drawings and for privileges at the end of the year celebration – Academy Awards Day. Teachers, principals, front office staff, and cafeteria staff will all award ANCHOR cards to students.

Achieving Notoriety through Citizenship, Honor, Organization, and Reliability is the acronym for the new program.  Students who exhibit these qualities through their actions have no alternative but to be successful in school and life.   Freshmen students may earn cards for perfect attendance, good grades, earning student of the week, or for any behavior deemed positive or beneficial to Gallatin High School by staff.

Community members may question the notion of rewarding students for behaviors that should simply be expected, but human beings of all ages respond to rewards:  a pat on the back, employee of the month, a monetary raise, a job promotion, or simply an honorary title are all ways adults get rewarded in the working world.  Why not students?

“The new ANCHOR program takes the emphasis off of negative behavior and puts it on positive behavior,” said Jennifer Moore, a faculy team leader in the Academy.  Although negative behavior will still be dealt with appropriately, this system aims to put the spotlight on students who are living above the line.

“This new reward system is also a great way for the community to get involved,” offers Scott Hunt, a Freshman Focus teacher at GHS.  Gallatin business owners who want to participate by donating prizes for the ANCHOR drawings should contact jennifer.moore@sumnerschools.org.
